Paint Tool SAI.

A commission to colour previous line work that I did! For a present!

My internet was all sorts of screwed up when I tried to finish it, leading me to agonize about references and stuff (luckily, I left the windows with some images open the previous night!).
And then I had to go dig out my old Gamecube controller to finally get the colours of that right. xD
Luckily, it got finished before the fated deadline and all was right with the world~

So here they are, two otter dudes playing Super Smash Bros Melee in colour! I imagine their arm linkage is both affectionate and a good way to screw each other over if one of them gets the upper hand in the game. xD

Colour version of this:

Otters! ;u; I love otters~ This is nicely done. I've just started using Sai, so I'm curious as to how you did this kind of coloring... I like the perspective of the drawing, the expressions on their faces, and the linked arms. I like what you said about em. XD

Thanks~

I pretty much just use the brush tool in SAI on 60 - 70% density: [link]

I coloured this image very similar to this walkthrough I made: [link]

The difference is that I already had lineart to colour when I coloured the otters, so I didn't have to take as long to draw everything in. It was basically: flats => mid shadow in cel shading style => add darker shadows if more definition needed => add highlights.

It just looks softer than regular cel-shading style because I use the brush instead of the pen tool, so there's a lot more colour variation. And I like having a lot of colour in my images usually, so I tend to use dark purples for shading (or whatever the base colour is, for the shade, I pick a colour colour to dark purple ont he little colour wheel in SAI). :>

Hmm... Thank you for all that~ :) You've helped broaden my understanding of Sai. I'm confused as to how you made that tool, though, even with the picture you sent. Can you explain it a little better...? Sorry. ^^;;

Well, you can just change any of the tools with the different sliders.
To make a NEW tool though, right-click on an empty square in the toolbox area, and a menu will pop up that says something like:
Pencil
Airbrush
Brush
WaterCol
Marker
Eraser

Then you can change the different sliders and textures so it has different densities and stuff.
This might help explain that a bit: [link]

But the brush setting that you have should work. Just change the density so it colour lighter or darker, and that will change the softness of the brush.
